Update on the NHS Position in Leeds regarding Weight Loss Injections
Important information about accessing Mounjaro (tirzepatide)
We are mindful of recent media coverage about the weight loss treatment Mounjaro (Tirzepatide).
Tirzepatide, commonly known as Mounjaro, is a weekly injection shown to help weight loss and improve related health conditions. From 23 June 2025 a small number of GP practices in West Yorkshire started to contact people who might be medically eligible for this treatment to invite them for a clinical assessment.
This phased rollout follows updated guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)and is part of a national staged programme aimed at improving health outcomes for people living with obesity and related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.
This medication is being rolled out gradually across the NHS in a phased way over the next 3 years. That means not everyone who may benefit will be able to get it right away.
At first, it will only be offered to people with serious health risks linked to their weight. If you are eligible, the NHS will contact you directly. Currently, only a few practices in specific areas of Leeds are being supported in providing this treatment to patients on the NHS.
